Forest bathing at Ardkinglas Woodland Garden
An arboretum of champion conifers at the head of Loch Fyne, open all year from dawn to dusk.
Ardkinglas Woodland Garden is an arboretum on the Ardkinglas Estate at Cairndow, at the head of Loch Fyne. It is known for its champion trees, among them a silver fir often called the mightiest conifer in Europe, and for a large collection of rhododendrons and azaleas. Paths wind past an old mill on the River Fyne and give views over the loch. Under the big conifers it is dim and still, and you can find a corner to sit for a long while.
Park inside the black estate gates and start from the Woodland Garden car park. The garden is on several levels: some paths suit wheelchairs and buggies, others are steep. The Gruffalo and Fairy Trails are aimed at children, so expect families on those. May and June are the best months for flowers, but the trees make it worth a visit at any time of year. Dogs are welcome on a lead. There is an entry charge.
