Forest bathing at Dinefwr Park

Medieval deer park, veteran trees and ancient oak woods above the Tywi at Llandeilo, with Dinefwr Castle above.

Dinefwr is an 800 acre estate of parkland, meadow and woodland on the edge of Llandeilo, cared for by the National Trust. It is a National Nature Reserve, with a medieval deer park, a herd of fallow deer and veteran trees that are among the oldest in Britain. Below the castle, Castle Woods is ancient semi-natural woodland on a steep slope above the River Tywi, mostly pedunculate oak with ash, beech, holly and hazel, looked after by the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales.

Most visitors park by Newton House and pick one of the waymarked walks, such as the circular Capability Brown walk or the longer wildlife walk. For quieter woodland, head up towards the castle and into Castle Woods, where paths are steeper and fewer people go. A long level boardwalk leads to the mill pond for an easier option. The parkland and castle are open dawn to dusk, and walking the park is free; only the house and garden charge.
