Forest bathing at Green Castle Woods

Two ancient oakwoods and newer planting near Carmarthen, with meadows, ponds, a stream and a small waterfall.

Green Castle Woods is a Woodland Trust site of about 50 hectares near Llangain, a few miles south west of Carmarthen. It joins two ancient oakwoods with a newer native woodland planted in the 1990s, alongside flower meadows, hedgerows, a stream, ponds and a waterfall. The old woods are English oak with downy birch, ash, alder and rowan, and the boundaries go back at least to a map of 1779. It is a mixed, gentle landscape that rewards slow walking.

From the car park at the main entrance, the path to the left is surfaced and suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs, a good choice for a short, easy visit of about 20 minutes. The longer Wild about Woods circular takes about an hour and can be muddy. In spring the oakwoods fill with bluebells and wood anemones, with primroses, wild garlic and sweet violet along the edges. There are no toilets on site.
