Forest bathing at Coed Maen Arthur

Woodland in the Ystwyth valley at Pont-rhyd-y-groes, with a deep gorge, a waterfall and a large Iron Age hillfort.

Coed Maen Arthur is a Natural Resources Wales woodland in the Ystwyth valley beside the village of Pont-rhyd-y-groes. The valley has a lead-mining history. A wooden bridge crosses a deep gorge, a waterfall drops through the trees, and the route passes Castell Grogwynion, one of the largest hillforts in Wales. The woods are especially colourful in autumn.

There is no car park: park considerately in the village, opposite the Lisburne mine water wheel, where the footpath gate is. The waymarked Coed Maen Arthur Trail is a circuit of about three miles with a long climb, steep descents and rough, sometimes wet ground; it takes about two hours. Take care near the gorge, where there are steep drops and the river runs fast after heavy rain. A bus runs from Aberystwyth to the village.
