Forest bathing at Allerthorpe Woods

A small, flat pine wood near Pocklington with a rare patch of northern lowland heath at its heart.

Allerthorpe Woods is a small pine wood in the Vale of York, just west of Pocklington, looked after by Forestry England. Part of it is leased to Yorkshire Wildlife Trust as a nature reserve, protecting a rare example of northern lowland heath, and the whole wood is managed with wildlife in mind. Pine trees and open heathy glades make it feel quite different from the farmland around it.

The car park and picnic area are at the north end of the wood, and public footpaths lead off from there. The ground is very flat, so it is an easy, unhurried walk, and a good choice if hills are a problem. It is open all day, every day, and dogs are welcome. Off-road cycling is not suitable here, which helps keep the paths quiet for walkers.
