Forest bathing at Queenswood Country Park and Arboretum

Ancient oak woodland and a large arboretum on Dinmore Hill, with waymarked trails, a viewpoint and strong autumn colour.

Queenswood is Herefordshire's only designated country park, run by Herefordshire Wildlife Trust. It covers 123 acres of ancient native woodland, a remnant of the oak wood that once stretched to the Welsh borders, alongside a 47-acre arboretum with more than 1,200 rare and exotic trees from around the world. The woodland is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Local Nature Reserve. Between the old oaks and the specimen trees there is a lot to look at closely.

This is one of the Trust's busiest sites, with a café, visitor centre, playground and a Gruffalo trail near the car park, so expect families around the hub at weekends. Walk out along the waymarked trails into the semi-natural woodland and it quietens quickly. Spring brings fresh glades under the oaks; in autumn the arboretum is the draw, with Japanese acers among the highlights. An online tree finder helps you track down particular specimens if you want a focus for your walk.
