Forest bathing at Combley Great Wood
A large old wood between Ryde and Arreton, with towering conifers, mature oaks and a brook running through it.
Combley Great Wood covers about 130 hectares in the east of the Island, between Ryde and Arreton, and is owned by Forestry England. It is one of the Island's largest and oldest woods, with majestic oaks alongside towering conifers, ferns and wildflowers on the woodland floor. Locally it is also known as Longround Rew. It is a good place for fungi in autumn.
There is no formal car park; the usual way in is the entrance on Combley Road. A waymarked two-mile circuit follows a permissive path to Deadman's Brook, then loops out past a quarry and Combley Farm on bridleways before returning through the wood. Walkers are allowed to explore the many permitted paths inside. Because it lacks big facilities, it tends to be quieter than Firestone or Parkhurst.
