Forest bathing at Gethin Woodland Park

A big Natural Resources Wales forest on the hillside south of Merthyr, with long views over the valleys and the Beacons.

Gethin Woodland Park covers around 850 hectares of forest on the hillside between Merthyr Tydfil and Abercanaid, managed by Natural Resources Wales. About 21 kilometres of routes have opened up parts of the woodland that had no public rights of way before, for walkers, riders and cyclists. From the higher tracks there are far-reaching views over the South Wales valleys to the Brecon Beacons. It is mostly conifer forestry, so expect tall plantation trees and wide forest roads rather than ancient woodland.

The forest is also home to BikePark Wales, so the trails near the bike park can be busy with riders; the walking routes away from it are the place for a slow visit. Forest tracks are firm but climb steadily, and the higher ground is exposed in wind and rain. In poor weather stay lower, where the trees give more shelter. Check access and parking with Natural Resources Wales before you go.
