Forest bathing at Attingham Park
A National Trust estate near Shrewsbury with a deer park, 370 acres of woods and oaks more than 650 years old.
Attingham is a large National Trust estate at Atcham, just outside Shrewsbury. Around the mansion are about 370 acres of woodland, a deer park fenced in 1798 for the fallow deer already living there, and roughly five miles of the Severn and the Tern. The parkland is a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its veteran trees, and some of the tallest, straightest oaks in the country grow here, including the Repton Oak, which is more than 650 years old.
Most visitors stay near the mansion and Stables courtyard, so heading out on the Deer Park walk or along the Tern is the easy way to find quiet. Powered mobility vehicles and wheelchairs can be booked ahead. Autumn brings fungi in the woods; late summer, dragonflies along the river. Grazing cattle use the front parkland in spring and summer. There is an admission charge for non-members.
