Forest bathing at Wentworth Castle Gardens and Stainborough Park

Sixty acres of historic gardens and 500 acres of parkland near Barnsley, with ancient woodland, bluebells and deer.

Wentworth Castle Gardens, near Barnsley, is a National Trust estate of about sixty acres of gardens set in roughly 500 acres of parkland at Stainborough. The parkland includes ancient woodland with bluebells in May and a herd of deer. In the gardens, Lady Lucy's Walk is an avenue of limes planted around the First World War, the Union Jack Garden survives from the original Baroque layout, and the Conservatory, restored in 2013, holds plants from five continents.

Start at Visitor Reception, by the free car park. A hard-standing path runs to the Conservatory; other garden paths are firm or grassy and often sloped, and the parkland has no surfaced paths, so wear boots for the woods. The parkland walks are where you are most likely to find quiet. A buggy shuttle runs during the day, and mobility scooters and an all-terrain tramper can be borrowed. Dodworth station is about 1.5 miles away.
