Forest bathing at Nymans

Ancient oak and beech woodland below a famous garden, with streams, a lake and cascades in a quiet valley.

Below the well known garden at Nymans, near Handcross, lies an ancient woodland that is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a nature reserve. Old oak and beech stand over streams, pools, a lake and cascades, and the damp valley is rich in rare mosses and ferns. The wood has an industrial past, which the waymarked Iron Walk explores.

Most visitors stay in the garden, so the woods are noticeably quieter. Shaded paths lead down from the garden to the lake, and the woodland walks are waymarked from a start point near the entrance. Paths are earth and can be muddy and hilly, with parts sometimes closed for tree work, so check signs on the day. In summer the shaded paths keep it cool.
