Forest bathing at West Woods

Ancient beech woodland south-west of Marlborough, famous for its late-spring bluebells and free to visit all year.

West Woods is an ancient woodland managed by Forestry England a couple of miles south-west of Marlborough. It is known for its beech trees, and in late spring the floor under them is carpeted with bluebells in places. Outside bluebell season it is a calm, open wood with a good network of paths, and the smooth grey trunks and high canopy of the beeches give it a spacious feel.

Park in the free car park, which has a height barrier, and choose from a network of walking trails, including an easy access route. Cyclists are kept to the stone forest roads and bridleways, so the smaller paths stay quiet. Late spring is the busiest time, when people come for the bluebells; visit early in the day, or come in autumn when the beech leaves turn, for more space. Dogs are welcome, and there is a picnic area.
