Forest bathing in Caerphilly
Caerphilly county borough runs from the edge of Cardiff up the Rhymney and Sirhowy valleys, and nearly every valley side has forest on it. Cwmcarn Forest, run by Natural Resources Wales and the council, lost its larch to disease a decade ago and has been replanted with a broader mix, and the Forest Drive is open again. Parc Cwm Darran above Bargoed has a lake and young broadleaf on a reclaimed colliery, Sirhowy Valley Country Park follows the river and an old railway through oak and beech near Crosskeys, and Ruperra has an ancient wood round its ruined castle.
Forest bathing does not need a view or a summit. A session settles into one patch of woodland for two or three hours, with a guide offering short invitations to notice sound, light and texture, and plenty of sitting still. The old railway in the Sirhowy valley suits anyone unsure of their footing. Each guide's profile has dates and prices.
Cwmcarn is the easiest start: a visitor centre with a cafe, a large car park and waymarked trails from gentle to steep. Sirhowy Valley Country Park at Crosskeys has free parking and a flat riverside path under the trees.
