Forest bathing in County Londonderry

County Londonderry has a surprising amount of old oak for a farming county. Banagher Glen south of Dungiven is a nature reserve of ancient oak and ash in a steep glen, one of the oldest woods in Ireland, with a track up to the Altnaheglish reservoir. Ness Country Park near Claudy has Ness Wood and Ervey Wood on either side of the Burntollet river and the Ness waterfall, the highest in Northern Ireland. Roe Valley Country Park at Limavady is a wooded gorge with the Roe running through it, and on the edge of Derry, Prehen Wood is a Woodland Trust ancient oakwood above the Foyle.

Sessions here are two or three hours in a small group under the trees, covering very little distance, with a guide offering simple invitations to notice and plenty of sitting by the river. Each guide's profile below gives their dates and prices.

Roe Valley is the simplest start, with a large car park at the Dogleap Centre, a visitor centre and level riverside paths. Ness Country Park has a car park and a well-made trail to the waterfall, and Prehen Wood is reachable on foot from the city.

Common questions

Forest bathing in County Londonderry: your questions

How much does forest bathing cost in County Londonderry?

Public group sessions usually cost about £20 to £45 a person for two to three hours. Private sessions for a couple or small group start at around £120 and go up with group size and length. Prices are set by each guide and shown on their profile.

Do I need to book?

Yes. Groups are small and most sessions fill up in good weather. Book through the guide's own website or send them an enquiry from their profile.

What should I wear?

Layers, a waterproof, and shoes you're happy to stand still in on damp ground. Sessions are slow, so you'll feel the cold more than on a walk. In summer bring water and something for insects.

Is it suitable for children or people with limited mobility?

It depends on the guide and the wood. Some guides run family sessions in the school holidays, and many choose woods with level paths. Look for the Accessible sessions filter, or ask the guide directly.

Are there sessions in winter?

Fewer, but yes. Woods are quieter in winter and often more atmospheric, and some guides run sessions all year round. Check individual profiles for dates.
