Forest bathing in Fife

Fife's woods come in two kinds: big Forestry and Land Scotland pine forests and small estate dens. Tentsmuir Forest, in the far north-east corner between Tayport and Leuchars, is Scots and Corsican pine on dunes beside a nature reserve and a long empty beach. Devilla Forest near Kincardine and Blairadam Forest near Kelty are pine and spruce with lochs and pockets of old oak. Lochore Meadows Country Park in the old coalfield has young woodland around a loch. In the middle of the county the Falkland estate's Maspie Den is a wooded gorge of beech and fir below the Lomond Hills, and Pittencrieff Park in Dunfermline has a wooded glen under the abbey.

A session is a slow two to three hours in a small group, most of it still, and Fife's variety means it might be among pines with the sea just audible or in a sheltered den in winter. Each guide's profile has their dates, venues and prices.

Tentsmuir's Kinshaldy car park, which charges, gives flat forest tracks and the beach within minutes. Lochore Meadows is free, with a visitor centre, cafe and level paths round the loch, and is easy from Edinburgh and Dunfermline.

Common questions

Forest bathing in Fife: your questions

How much does forest bathing cost in Fife?

Public group sessions usually cost about £20 to £45 a person for two to three hours. Private sessions for a couple or small group start at around £120 and go up with group size and length. Prices are set by each guide and shown on their profile.

Do I need to book?

Yes. Groups are small and most sessions fill up in good weather. Book through the guide's own website or send them an enquiry from their profile.

What should I wear?

Layers, a waterproof, and shoes you're happy to stand still in on damp ground. Sessions are slow, so you'll feel the cold more than on a walk. In summer bring water and something for insects.

Is it suitable for children or people with limited mobility?

It depends on the guide and the wood. Some guides run family sessions in the school holidays, and many choose woods with level paths. Look for the Accessible sessions filter, or ask the guide directly.

Are there sessions in winter?

Fewer, but yes. Woods are quieter in winter and often more atmospheric, and some guides run sessions all year round. Check individual profiles for dates.
