Forest bathing in Neath Port Talbot

Neath Port Talbot is as wooded as any county in South Wales, mostly because so much of it is hillside forestry. Afan Forest Park fills the Afan valley above Port Talbot with Natural Resources Wales conifer and regenerating broadleaf on old colliery ground. Margam Country Park, just off the M4, has 850 acres of deer park, ancient oaks and planted woodland around the castle and abbey ruins. The Gnoll in Neath is an eighteenth-century estate of cascades, lakes and mature trees, and Melincourt Falls near Resolven drops through a Wildlife Trust oak wood.

A session in the Afan or Neath valleys is two or three hours in a small group under the trees, going slowly and stopping often, with the guide offering a few simple invitations and then getting out of the way. The plantations are sheltered enough for winter sessions. Each guide's profile shows their dates and prices.

Margam Country Park is the simplest start, with a big car park, a cafe and level paths through the parkland to the woods. Afan Forest Park at Cynonville has a large car park and waymarked trails that start gently along the river before climbing.

Common questions

Forest bathing in Neath Port Talbot: your questions

How much does forest bathing cost in Neath Port Talbot?

Public group sessions usually cost about £20 to £45 a person for two to three hours. Private sessions for a couple or small group start at around £120 and go up with group size and length. Prices are set by each guide and shown on their profile.

Do I need to book?

Yes. Groups are small and most sessions fill up in good weather. Book through the guide's own website or send them an enquiry from their profile.

What should I wear?

Layers, a waterproof, and shoes you're happy to stand still in on damp ground. Sessions are slow, so you'll feel the cold more than on a walk. In summer bring water and something for insects.

Is it suitable for children or people with limited mobility?

It depends on the guide and the wood. Some guides run family sessions in the school holidays, and many choose woods with level paths. Look for the Accessible sessions filter, or ask the guide directly.

Are there sessions in winter?

Fewer, but yes. Woods are quieter in winter and often more atmospheric, and some guides run sessions all year round. Check individual profiles for dates.
