Forest bathing in Newport

Newport is a city on the Usk with surprisingly good woodland on its edges. North of the M4, Allt-yr-yn is a council nature reserve of ancient oak and ash on the hillside above the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, reached from the Fourteen Locks canal centre at Rogerstone. To the east, the ridge of Wentwood spills over the county boundary, and Penhow Woodlands is a small National Nature Reserve of ancient limestone woodland on its southern edge. Tredegar House, the National Trust's seventeenth-century mansion off the A48, has parkland and a lake with mature trees.

Forest bathing sessions here are short on distance and long on stillness: two or three hours in one patch of woodland with a small group, a guide offering simple things to notice, and plenty of sitting. The profiles of guides listed below carry their dates and prices.

Fourteen Locks is the practical starting point: a car park and visitor centre with a cafe, then a level towpath walk to the Allt-yr-yn woods. Tredegar House has a large National Trust car park, a cafe and firm paths round the lake and through the park.

Common questions

Forest bathing in Newport: your questions

How much does forest bathing cost in Newport?

Public group sessions usually cost about £20 to £45 a person for two to three hours. Private sessions for a couple or small group start at around £120 and go up with group size and length. Prices are set by each guide and shown on their profile.

Do I need to book?

Yes. Groups are small and most sessions fill up in good weather. Book through the guide's own website or send them an enquiry from their profile.

What should I wear?

Layers, a waterproof, and shoes you're happy to stand still in on damp ground. Sessions are slow, so you'll feel the cold more than on a walk. In summer bring water and something for insects.

Is it suitable for children or people with limited mobility?

It depends on the guide and the wood. Some guides run family sessions in the school holidays, and many choose woods with level paths. Look for the Accessible sessions filter, or ask the guide directly.

Are there sessions in winter?

Fewer, but yes. Woods are quieter in winter and often more atmospheric, and some guides run sessions all year round. Check individual profiles for dates.
