Forest bathing in South Ayrshire

South Ayrshire's woods are on the coast and in the hills behind it. Culzean Castle and Country Park, owned by the National Trust for Scotland, has several hundred acres of mature woodland above the cliffs south of Maybole, with a deer park, swan pond and miles of paths. In Ayr, Rozelle Park and Belleisle Park have old parkland trees and small woods a mile from the beach, and the Auchincruive estate's oakwoods line the River Ayr Way east of the town. Inland, the Galloway Forest Park spills over the county boundary into Carrick Forest, where the Stinchar Falls walk from Stinchar Bridge runs through spruce to a waterfall.

A guided session lasts two or three hours, covers very little ground, and Culzean's mix of woodland and sea air gives it something inland sites lack. Rozelle is easy for a weekday. Each guide's profile shows dates, venues and prices.

Rozelle Park is free, with parking, a cafe at Rozelle House and level paths, and is a short bus ride from Ayr station. Culzean has large car parks and a cafe, charges admission for non-members, and its lower woodland paths are gentle.

Common questions

Forest bathing in South Ayrshire: your questions

How much does forest bathing cost in South Ayrshire?

Public group sessions usually cost about £20 to £45 a person for two to three hours. Private sessions for a couple or small group start at around £120 and go up with group size and length. Prices are set by each guide and shown on their profile.

Do I need to book?

Yes. Groups are small and most sessions fill up in good weather. Book through the guide's own website or send them an enquiry from their profile.

What should I wear?

Layers, a waterproof, and shoes you're happy to stand still in on damp ground. Sessions are slow, so you'll feel the cold more than on a walk. In summer bring water and something for insects.

Is it suitable for children or people with limited mobility?

It depends on the guide and the wood. Some guides run family sessions in the school holidays, and many choose woods with level paths. Look for the Accessible sessions filter, or ask the guide directly.

Are there sessions in winter?

Fewer, but yes. Woods are quieter in winter and often more atmospheric, and some guides run sessions all year round. Check individual profiles for dates.
