Forest bathing in Vale of Glamorgan

The Vale of Glamorgan is low farmland between Cardiff and Bridgend, and its woods are in the stream valleys and along the coast. Porthkerry Country Park at Barry has 220 acres of woodland and meadow in a valley running down to a pebble beach under the railway viaduct. Cwm George and Casehill Woods at Dinas Powys are Woodland Trust ancient woodland with a hillfort on top and bluebells in May. Hensol Forest near Pendoylan is Natural Resources Wales mixed woodland, and Dyffryn Gardens at St Nicholas has the National Trust's arboretum.

Sessions in these small woods are quiet and close to home for anyone in Cardiff or Barry: two or three hours in a small group, moving slowly through one wood and spending most of the time still, with the guide offering simple things to notice. The coast path woods at Porthkerry add sea air. Each guide's profile below shows dates and prices.

Porthkerry is the obvious start, with a large car park, a cafe, flat paths through the meadows into the woods, and Barry or Rhoose stations not far away. Cwm George is a short walk from Dinas Powys station, with no facilities but good paths.

Common questions

Forest bathing in Vale of Glamorgan: your questions

How much does forest bathing cost in Vale of Glamorgan?

Public group sessions usually cost about £20 to £45 a person for two to three hours. Private sessions for a couple or small group start at around £120 and go up with group size and length. Prices are set by each guide and shown on their profile.

Do I need to book?

Yes. Groups are small and most sessions fill up in good weather. Book through the guide's own website or send them an enquiry from their profile.

What should I wear?

Layers, a waterproof, and shoes you're happy to stand still in on damp ground. Sessions are slow, so you'll feel the cold more than on a walk. In summer bring water and something for insects.

Is it suitable for children or people with limited mobility?

It depends on the guide and the wood. Some guides run family sessions in the school holidays, and many choose woods with level paths. Look for the Accessible sessions filter, or ask the guide directly.

Are there sessions in winter?

Fewer, but yes. Woods are quieter in winter and often more atmospheric, and some guides run sessions all year round. Check individual profiles for dates.
