Forest bathing at Arger Fen and Spouse’s Vale
Ancient coppice woodland near Sudbury with large wild cherries, bluebells in spring, and wet meadow and fen below.
Arger Fen and Spouse's Vale is a 110-hectare Suffolk Wildlife Trust reserve near Assington, south-east of Sudbury. It combines ancient coppice woodland with younger woodland that has grown up naturally, plus wet meadow and fen in the valley. Oak, ash, field maple, holly, crab apple, hazel and large alders grow here, and it is one of the few ancient woods in Suffolk where wild cherry has survived in large numbers. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Local Nature Reserve.
Spring is the best time, when the bluebells are out and the cherries flower. The Trust recommends March to September generally. The trails are mostly good but get muddy after rain and are not suitable for wheelchairs. Parking is limited and the car park often fills at busy times; if it is full, park in Leavenheath village and walk in on the public footpath rather than on the verges. Dogs must be on a lead. The reserve is open at all times.
