Forest bathing at Cammo Estate
An 85-acre former pleasure ground on the city's western edge, with open woodland and big old trees beside the River Almond.
Cammo is an 85-acre remnant of an old aristocratic pleasure ground on the north-west edge of Edinburgh. The estate fell into disrepair in the twentieth century; the National Trust for Scotland was given what was left in 1975 and passed it to the council, which now runs it as a Local Nature Reserve. What remains is mature, open woodland with some very large trees, old estate features slowly being taken back by nature, and the River Almond along one boundary.
The free car park is on Cammo Walk, with a second one on Cammo Road. From there, paths lead through the woods and out along the river, which is usually the quieter side. The estate is loose and rambling rather than manicured, which suits an unhurried walk with plenty of stops. The small lodge visitor centre and toilets open only on a few afternoons a week, so come prepared. Paths are mostly unsurfaced and can be soft in winter.
