Forest bathing at Castle Caldwell Forest
Lowland woodland on two promontories in Lower Lough Erne near Belleek, being restored to native trees.
Castle Caldwell Forest covers about 200 hectares near Belleek, most of it on two promontories reaching into Lower Lough Erne. It's mixed broadleaf and conifer woodland with good signs of ancient woodland, and the Forest Service is gradually removing non-native conifers from Rossmore and Rossinure to bring back native woods. The small islands are a bird sanctuary monitored with the RSPB. The ruins of Castle Caldwell look over the lough from Rossinure, though they are closed for safety.
Waymarked trails start from the car park off the A47 Belleek to Kesh road, about four miles from Belleek. One route goes out along the Rossinure promontory, with water on both sides and views over the lough. It's a quiet, unshowy place, good for an unhurried walk and stopping by the shore. Parts may close for forestry work.
