Forest bathing at Castlemilk Park

Old estate woodland of oak, beech and lime, with giant sequoias, a burn, a pond and a small waterfall.

Castlemilk Park is the woodland of the old Castlemilk House estate, stretching from Croftfoot Road to Ardencraig Road. Oak, beech and lime dominate, and the old tree-lined driveways now form the paths. A forester on the estate in the 1860s planted over 391,000 trees, including the giant sequoias along the old drive. A stream runs through the woods to an old fishing pond and a waterfall, with kingfishers and dippers about.

Three short waymarked walks start and finish at Castlemilk Stables on Machrie Road. The Waterfall Walk, past the pond and the sequoias, is the one to take for slow time by the water. Paths are wide tarmac with a few steep sections, a kissing gate and some cobbles, so it is one of the easier woods in the city to get round. Daffodils line Barlia Drive in spring, then bluebells; fungi come in autumn. Paths can flood after heavy rain and get icy in cold spells.
