Clipped yew trees lining the avenue at Clipsham, Rutland

Forest bathing at Clipsham Yew Tree Avenue

A former carriage drive lined with around 150 clipped yews, many over 200 years old, on the edge of Clipsham.

Clipsham Yew Tree Avenue was once the carriage drive to Clipsham Hall, on the edge of the village of Clipsham in north east Rutland. It is lined with around 150 yews, most over 200 years old, clipped into all kinds of unusual shapes. The trees are on Forestry Commission land, and the Clipsham Yew Tree Avenue Trust, a charity, has a 20 year agreement to look after them and is restoring the avenue after years of little maintenance.

It is not a large wood, more a long, quiet walk between dark, sculpted trees, but it is unlike anywhere else in the county and suits a slow visit with stops. A small free car park gives year round access, and entry is free. Bring a picnic in summer. Combine it with Prior's Coppice or the Hambleton peninsula if you want more time under trees.
