Forest bathing at Craufurdland Estate
A short, muddy woodland trail above the Fenwick Water on a castle estate just outside Kilmarnock.
Craufurdland Estate lies just north-east of Kilmarnock, around Craufurdland Castle and the Fenwick Water. A woodland trail of about a mile and a half loops through the estate woods, through conifers and along a tree-lined field edge, with a high-level section looking down on the Fenwick Water far below and glimpses of the castle through the trees. It is a short walk, but you can easily spend an hour or more on it if you take your time.
Parking is at The Laird's Table café and restaurant, beside the estate's fishing loch, and is for customers, so plan a coffee before or after. The trail is mostly natural path with roots and plenty of mud, with boardwalks and small footbridges over the boggiest parts, so wear boots. Anglers use the loch, so keep noise down as you pass. The road to the castle is private. Forestry work sometimes leaves trees across the path or closes it for a while.
