Forest bathing at Felbrigg Great Wood

380 acres of old beech, oak and sweet chestnut near Cromer, planted over generations by the squires of Felbrigg.

The Great Wood covers about 380 acres of the National Trust's Felbrigg estate, two and a half miles from Cromer. It was planted over several generations, mainly for timber, so trees of very different ages stand side by side: ancient beeches, oak, sweet chestnut, hawthorn, ash and sycamore. Old hollow trees give roosts to bats, and tawny owls live here. In 1946 the squire, Robert Wyndham Ketton-Cremer, planted the Victory V, two tree-lined avenues that make a V seen from the air, to mark the Allied victory and in memory of his brother.

Park at the main car park by the hall and walk into the wood from there. The church and ice house walk, about 2.6 miles, takes in notable trees, the 18th-century ice house built to look like a ruin, and a hidden lake. Paths are a mix of gravel, compacted earth and grass, with some slopes and small steps. Autumn is the obvious time to come, when the beech turns, though the wood is worth a slow walk in any season. The Weavers' Way also crosses the estate. Mobile signal is poor, so have a map with you.
