Forest bathing at Fyne Court
A National Trust estate in the Quantocks where an old family garden has gone back to woodland, with streams and meadows.
Fyne Court, at Broomfield in the Quantock Hills, is a 65 acre National Trust estate where a family garden has slowly gone back to nature. The Crosse family lived here for more than 300 years; the house burned down in 1894, and what remains sits among broadleaved woodland, ponds and meadows. An arboretum laid out in 1780 is now overgrown and supports more than 100 kinds of fungi, and there is a folly and a boathouse at the head of the old serpentine lake.
Three waymarked walks start from the courtyard, where the café and toilets are, and there is an accessible route around the garden. The sky glade is the place to stop: a clearing for sitting quietly and listening to birdsong. Expect natural woodland paths, streams and fallen trees. Entry is free and the estate is open all year from dawn to dusk.
