Forest bathing at Habberley Valley
A sandstone valley near Kidderminster where heath gives way to birch and oak woodland, overlooked by Peckett Rock.
Habberley Valley is a local nature reserve of about 27 hectares on the north-west edge of Kidderminster, managed by Wyre Forest District Council. Open acid grassland and heath in the south give way to birch and oak woodland further north, with bilberry underneath in places. The Woodland Trust lists it as semi-natural ancient woodland. Peckett Rock, a red sandstone outcrop about 120 feet high, gives the valley its shape and the best views over it.
Paths spread out from the main car park on the B4190, with waymarking and information boards. The Habberley Valley Circular Walk is about four kilometres, on undulating ground with one steep climb on steps and a steep descent, and the sandy paths can be muddy and slippery after rain. For quieter time under the trees, head north into the woodland away from the open heath. Shetland cattle graze the reserve for a couple of months a year. A small coffee hut by the car park opens on some days.
