Forest bathing at The Hurtwood
About 3,000 acres of pine and mixed woodland on the Greensand hills around Peaslake, Holmbury Hill and Pitch Hill.
The Hurtwood is about 3,000 acres of woodland on the Greensand Ridge around Peaslake, one of the most thickly wooded parts of Surrey. Much of it is pine and other conifers, mixed with broadleaf trees on varied, hilly ground. It takes in Holmbury Hill, with its Bronze Age hill fort, Pitch Hill and Winterfold, and the Friends of the Hurtwood look after it.
There are nine Hurtwood car parks around the woods, and Peaslake village has a shop and a pub. The hilltops draw people for the views, so for quiet look for the footpaths through the woods in between. The pines give shelter in wind and a soft, needle covered floor underfoot. Paths are sandy and can be steep.
