Forest bathing at Mill Glen, Tillicoultry

A narrow, craggy gorge above Tillicoultry where the burn once drove the mills, with footbridges over the falls.

Mill Glen, also called Tillicoultry Glen, is one of the Hillfoot Glens that cut into the Ochil Hills, steep sided and wooded with a fast burn running through. The Tillicoultry Burn has carved a narrow gorge with towering cliffs and cascading falls, and its damp, shaded sides are thick with mosses, lichens and ferns. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the burn powered the village's textile mills, and remains of weirs and sluices can still be seen.

The glen is easy to reach on foot from the village, with paths heading north into the gorge and footbridges giving views of the waterfalls. The path is rugged and steep in places, so wear good boots. The lower glen is the place for a slow walk; beyond it the route climbs out onto The Law and on towards Ben Cleuch, the highest point of the Ochils, which is a proper hill walk. Look for dippers and wagtails along the burn.
