Forest bathing at Ogden Water

Woodland wrapped around a moorland reservoir above Halifax, with an accessible path through the trees.

Ogden Water is a Yorkshire Water reservoir on the edge of the moors north-west of Halifax, enclosed by woodland with open moor beyond. Calderdale Countryside Services manage the woods on Yorkshire Water's behalf. The contrast is part of its appeal: sheltered paths under the trees, then the wide, bare moor a short climb away.

From the car park, the road leads past the small volunteer-run visitor centre and toilets to the dam wall. About a mile and a quarter of wheelchair-accessible path runs round the reservoir and through parts of the woodland, which makes it a good choice if you want level walking. For quieter woods, follow the cloughs that feed the reservoir, where paths are narrower and boggy in places. The visitor centre sells hot drinks and snacks.
