Oak trees in the woodland of Powis Castle gardens, Welshpool

Forest bathing at Powis Castle and Garden

National Trust terraces and giant clipped yews above Welshpool, and oak woodland in the area known as the Wilderness.

Powis Castle sits above Welshpool, and its Grade I listed garden is laid out in 17th-century Italianate terraces. The clipped yews are enormous, some hedges reaching around 55 feet, and there is an Edwardian formal garden below. Beyond the formal areas the garden takes in the Wilderness, with oak woodland among the planting, and that is where to go for a quieter walk away from the castle and the terraces.

This is a National Trust garden with an admission charge (members free) and set opening hours, so check before you go. Parking on the estate is free. Paths are step-free, but there are steep slopes and unfenced terrace edges, so take care with children. Welshpool station is about a mile away on foot. Dogs are allowed in the garden only on set dates, so check that too if you are bringing one.
