Forest bathing at Pressmennan Wood
An ancient oak and beech wood above Pressmennan Lake near Stenton, wooded continuously since at least the early 1400s.
Pressmennan Wood covers about 86 hectares on the northern slopes of Deuchrie Dod, at the edge of the Lammermuir Hills, with Pressmennan Lake lying along its northern side. It has been wooded since at least the early 15th century, and its oak is thought to have gone into the warship Great Michael, launched in 1511. Much of it is ancient semi-natural woodland of oak, beech and ash, with Scots pine, larch and Douglas fir from later planting; the Woodland Trust has owned it since 1988 and is slowly removing conifers and rhododendron to let native trees come back.
The small free car park at the west entrance has room for about eight cars, so weekday mornings are quietest. A sculpture trail loops from the car park, and a surfaced track of about two kilometres runs east along the lake. A second gate leads up Gallows Law to a viewpoint with a bench. The grass and earth paths get muddy and some are narrow or steep.
