Forest bathing at Raincliffe and Forge Valley Woods

Ancient mixed broadleaf woodland on the edge of Scarborough, a National Nature Reserve with eleven free car parks.

Raincliffe and Forge Valley Woods form a large block of ancient woodland a few miles inland from Scarborough, running north from East Ayton. It is a National Nature Reserve, and among the best examples of mixed deciduous woodland in north-east England. Look out for older layers too: Neolithic burial mounds, ancient holloways and traces of the industry that gave Forge Valley its name.

With eleven free car parks spread along the valley road, it is easy to pick a stretch and walk away from the road into the trees; picnic sites are dotted through the woods. Raincliffe Wood Community Enterprise helps look after the woods and has accessibility details on its website. The southern section from the Old Man's Mouth car park has had a temporary footpath closure, so check before you set out. Dogs are welcome under control.
