Forest bathing at Roslin Glen Country Park
Ancient oak and birch gorge woodland on the River North Esk below Roslin, with bluebells and old gunpowder mill ruins.
Roslin Glen is a steep gorge on the River North Esk, lined with ancient semi-natural oak and birch woodland and sandstone cliffs. It looks wild now, but the glen was busy for two centuries: there were bleach fields here in the 1700s, then Scotland's largest gunpowder mill, which ran from 1804 to 1954, and a carpet factory that closed in 1968. Remnants of the mill buildings still sit among the trees, slowly softening into the woodland.
From the free car park on the B7003, whin paths lead down to the river, the weir and the old mill area. Walk upstream along the river for the quieter, more enclosed stretches of gorge. In spring the woodland floor is covered in bluebells, and dippers and the occasional kingfisher work the water. Paths link up to Roslin village and on to Springfield Mill if you want a longer walk. Some paths are steep near the cliffs and can be slippery after rain.
