Forest bathing at RSPB Ynys-hir
Welsh oak woodland on the Dyfi estuary near Machynlleth, with bluebells and pied flycatchers in spring.
Ynys-hir is an RSPB reserve on the south side of the Dyfi estuary, at Eglwys-fach between Aberystwyth and Machynlleth. Old Welsh oak woodland sits beside the open estuary, so in one visit you can move from the shade of the trees to wide views over the water. In spring the woods are full of breeding pied flycatchers, redstarts and wood warblers.
Start at the visitor centre, where you can pick up a trail guide; the reserve is open from dawn to dusk. The oak woods are at their best in spring, when bluebells carpet the ground and the birdsong is loud. In summer, dragonflies and butterflies take over, and in autumn and winter the attention turns to geese and wildfowl on the estuary. Entry is free for RSPB members; others pay an admission charge.
