Forest bathing at Savernake Forest
A thousand-year-old forest south of Marlborough, full of veteran trees, with free parking at Postern Hill.
Savernake Forest lies just south of Marlborough and has a history going back a thousand years or more. Centuries of management have left it with very old trees, varied landscapes and a wide range of habitats, and it is both a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a registered historic park. Its best-known tree is the Big Bellied Oak beside the A346, one of the oldest trees in the country. It is a forest made for slow walking between ancient trunks.
Forestry England's Postern Hill car park is the usual starting point, with free parking, a picnic area and seasonal toilets. From there a mix of surfaced and unsurfaced paths leads into the forest, including easy access routes. Wander away from the car park and the long rides and old trees quickly take over. Fires and barbecues are not allowed. Forestry work is planned, so look out for signs.
