Forest bathing at Stourhead
A celebrated 18th-century landscape garden set within a large estate of ancient woods, chalk downs and valleys.
Stourhead, near Mere in the south-west corner of Wiltshire, is a National Trust estate of about 2,650 acres. At its centre is the landscape garden created by Henry Hoare II in the 18th century and laid out around a lake. Beyond the garden the wider estate takes in ancient woods, chalk downland, Iron Age hillforts and farmland, so there is far more here than the famous view across the water.
The garden is the busiest part, especially on fine weekends. For quieter time under trees, look at the estate walks through Bonham Wood and Six Wells Valley, or follow the garden's tree trail, which picks out 17 notable trees. Alfred's Tower, on the edge of the estate woods, opens at weekends in summer. There is an admission charge for the garden, and parking is charged for non-members. Dogs on short leads are welcome in the garden.
