Forest bathing at Warburg Nature Reserve
A wildlife trust reserve in a quiet Chiltern valley near Henley, with unusually varied woodland and fifteen kinds of orchid.
Warburg Nature Reserve lies in Bix Bottom, a quiet Chiltern valley near Henley-on-Thames, and belongs to the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust. Most Chiltern woods are dominated by beech, but Warburg is more varied: oak, hazel, ash, beech, birch, field maple and conifers, with scrub and open glades between them. Fifteen species of orchid have been recorded here.
Start from the visitor centre, which has toilets and a picnic area, and follow the trails into the woods and clearings; the further you go from the centre, the quieter it becomes. In late spring and early summer the glades are the place to look for orchids. Most paths are not suitable for manual wheelchairs, but an off-road mobility vehicle is available at the visitor centre. Dogs have restricted access, so check before you bring one. The reserve is open all year.
