Forest bathing at Windsor Great Park
A former royal hunting forest south of Windsor, with one of the largest collections of ancient oaks in western Europe.
Windsor Great Park covers around 2,000 hectares south of Windsor, on the border of Berkshire and Surrey, and is cared for by the Crown Estate. For centuries it was the private hunting ground of Windsor Castle, and it still holds one of the largest collections of ancient oaks left in western Europe; the oldest, King Offa's Oak, is thought to be well over a thousand years old. Much of the park is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and a herd of semi-wild red deer lives in the enclosed deer park at its northern end.
The park is free to enter and open all year; only residents and staff can drive in, so the roads inside are free of traffic. Ranger's Gate and Cranbourne Gate, both on the A332 on the Windsor side, are good starting points for the woods and old oaks. The Long Walk, the famous tree-lined avenue from Windsor Castle, is busier but makes an easy, straight walk from the town.
