Forest bathing at Bargoed Woodland Park

Woodland paths along the River Rhymney on the site of three old collieries, minutes from Bargoed station.

Bargoed Woodland Park runs along the River Rhymney between Bargoed, Aberbargoed, Gilfach and Pengam, on land that once held the Gilfach, Bargoed and Britannia collieries and what was said to be the highest coal tip in Europe. Since the last colliery closed in 1985 the ground has been reshaped and planted, and it now has a quiet, natural feel, with sculpted gateways and carvings that remember the mining communities. Look for dippers, herons and kingfishers on the river, and otters if you are lucky.

There are entrances on all sides, and Bargoed station is about five minutes' walk away, which makes this one of the easiest woods in the county to reach without a car. The main woodland paths are mostly tarmac with scooter-friendly barriers; other paths are stone dust or natural. The A469 runs through the park, so for quieter time keep to the riverside. There are no toilets on site.
