Forest bathing at Coed Llangwyfan

Huge conifers and broadleaves on a steep hillside in the Clwydian Range, opening onto heather below the Penycloddiau hillfort.

Coed Llangwyfan covers a steep-sided hill in the Clwydian Range, about five miles east of Denbigh, where the trees give way to heather-covered slopes. It has some huge conifers as well as areas of broadleaved woodland, and its car park is the gateway to two hillforts, Penycloddiau and Moel Arthur, so a visit can combine trees and open hill.

The waymarked Coed Llangwyfan Walk is a moderate circuit of about three kilometres through the woodland, with a climb and a viewpoint halfway round looking out over the Vale of Clwyd. If you want to stay under the trees, linger on the lower part of the loop rather than heading up to the open hill. The routes on to Penycloddiau and Moel Arthur follow Offa's Dyke Path and are steeper and more exposed. Not all of the longer routes are waymarked, so carry a map.
