Scots pines, some storm damaged, in John Muir Country Park near Dunbar

Forest bathing at John Muir Country Park

Mature Scots pine plantation on the southern edge of the dunes west of Dunbar, with the John Muir Way running through.

John Muir Country Park, named after the naturalist born in Dunbar, stretches along the coast west of the town. Its woodland is about 42 hectares, and the main plantation, on the southern edge of the sand dunes, is mostly mature Scots pine. Storms have brought down trees in places, so expect some fallen pines and open gaps. The park is known for its birds, plants, butterflies and moths, and the John Muir Way runs through it.

This is the place for pine woodland with the sound of the sea close by. There are plenty of well-kept paths, and you can move between the shelter of the trees and the open dunes and beach. The pinewood is the better choice on a windy day; on calm days the dune edges are quieter than the main paths near the car parks. There is ample parking and a public toilet. Expect sandy ground, softer towards the beach.
