Forest bathing at Pretty Corner Woods
Woodland and heath on the ridge above Sheringham, with veteran oaks and beeches and a view to the sea from the top.
Pretty Corner Woods cover about 165 acres of woodland, heath, grassland and ponds just south of Sheringham. The western half belongs to North Norfolk District Council and the eastern part, Old Wood and Sheringham Wood, to the Woodland Trust, and the two manage it together. It lies on the Holt to Cromer ridge, left behind by the Ice Age, and was once mostly heath. Today you will find conifers planted in the 1960s, slowly being turned back to broadleaves and heath, alongside veteran oak, beech and sweet chestnut hundreds of years old.
There are car parks at each end, including a small free one on Pretty Corner Lane, and Sheringham station is about a mile away. The paths are many: some surfaced, some boardwalk, some steep, and the lower ones get muddy in winter. A steady climb brings you to one of the highest points in Norfolk, 96 metres up, with a view over Sheringham to the sea. A waymarked sculpture trail runs through the woods if you want something to follow. The nearest toilets are in the town centre.
