Forest bathing at Porthkerry Country Park

A sheltered wooded valley running down to a pebble beach west of Barry, crossed by a Victorian railway viaduct.

Porthkerry Country Park is 220 acres of woods and meadow in a sheltered valley that runs down to a pebble beach just west of Barry. The first stretch of the valley runs alongside woodland of national importance, and nearby Middleton Wood is part of the Coedydd y Barri Site of Special Scientific Interest. A railway viaduct from the 1890s strides across the valley above the trees.

The main car park, café, play area and open meadow are the busy part on fine days. For quieter time take the nature trails into the woods: the gravel path through Cwm Barry is the easier one, while the path through Millwood is rougher. Woodland paths can be muddy and are not great for wheelchairs. You can also climb onto the Wales Coast Path along the cliffs, or follow the tarmac path under the viaduct to the beach.
