Forest bathing at Chirk Castle

Parkland and old woods around Chirk Castle, with a veteran sweet chestnut over 500 years old.

Chirk Castle is surrounded by 480 acres of parkland with ancient trees, wildflowers and plenty of birds. The National Trust's woodland walk links two of its woods, Deershed Wood and Pleasure Ground Wood. The tree most people come to see is a veteran sweet chestnut about eight metres round and more than 500 years old, which is a good place to stop and spend some time.

The woodland walk is an easy circuit of about two and a half miles from the castle car park, with views over the parkland, a bird hide on the way and the plinth where a statue of Hercules once stood. Paths are mostly gravel, earth or tarmac, with exposed roots, uneven ground and gentle slopes; the last stretch crosses open fields that may have livestock. Dogs on leads are welcome. For quiet, walk the woods early before the castle and garden fill up.
