Forest bathing at Moss Valley Country Park

A steep wooded valley of oak and beech north of Wrexham, reclaimed from old coal workings, with two small lakes.

Moss Valley Country Park is a steep V-shaped valley about three miles north of Wrexham, between Gwersyllt and Brynteg. It was once a busy coal mining area; the spoil heaps were reclaimed in 1973, and today the valley sides are wooded with oak and beech around two small lakes and patches of open grassland. Old railways, tramways and small sandstone quarries are still visible among the trees, and the valley is good for birds.

There are two free car parks on Poolmouth Road near the lakes, and many paths follow the old tramway and railway lines. The two looping walks include steps, uneven ground, gradients and narrow sections, so take them slowly. The old railway path is shared with cyclists and horse riders; the narrower woodland paths are quieter. There are no toilets or café, so it suits a simple, unhurried visit.
