Forest bathing at Bodnant Garden

An 80-acre National Trust garden in the Conwy Valley, with wooded dells, champion trees and a hillside meadow above the river.

Bodnant Garden covers 80 acres on the east side of the Conwy Valley: formal terraces near the house, then meadows, woods, dells and water gardens dropping towards the river. The Dell, Yew Dell and Far End are woodland walks among native and exotic trees, with magnolias, rhododendrons and a number of old and rare Champion Trees. Down in The Dell the river and the tall trees make it feel very different from the terraces above.

Head for The Dell and Yew Dell for the most sheltered, tree-filled part of the garden, and keep going to the Far End for space away from the main paths. Above the riverside garden, the Furnace Wood and Meadow trail is a two-mile hillside loop with wide views. Spring is the busiest season, with magnolias and rhododendrons in flower; autumn colour in the dells is a quieter time to come. Arriving at opening time helps on any day.
