Forest bathing at Dodd Wood
A wooded hill above Bassenthwaite Lake, with trails from one car park and red squirrels all year.
Dodd Wood covers the slopes of Dodd, a small fell on the eastern shore of Bassenthwaite Lake, north of Keswick, opposite Mirehouse. It is a compact wood with a clear layout: every trail starts from the one car park, on a network of gravel roads, surfaced paths and tracks. Red squirrels can be seen here all year, and the higher paths look out over the lake and the northern fells.
The lower paths near the car park and tearoom are the easy option, and you do not need to climb far to find a quiet bench or a spot among the trees. The route to Dodd summit is a proper climb, so leave it for a day when you want the view. The wood is small enough that you can take it slowly and still be back for tea. Download the forest map before you go; parts of the hill are steep.
