Forest bathing at Dyrham Park
A 17th-century house in 270 acres of ancient parkland, with wooded terraces and fallow deer on the Cotswold edge.
Dyrham Park is a National Trust estate north of Bath, with a baroque house built in the late 17th century for William Blathwayt. The house sits in 270 acres of ancient parkland, home to a herd of fallow deer and a wide range of trees, and the garden has wooded terraces. It is more open parkland than deep forest, but the old trees and long views make it a good place for slow walking.
From the car park a shuttle runs down to the house, or you can walk. The Terraces walk, about 2.5 miles, loops through parkland and woodland; the Prospect Walk, about 3 miles, gives views over the Cotswold hills to the Bristol Channel. The parkland is steep and uneven in places. Because of the deer, only assistance dogs are allowed. There is an admission charge for non-members, and the car park closes earlier in winter.
